From Sharon DeSalvo, Kindergarten Teacher, Bache-Martin Elementary:

Philadelphia School teachers struggle with a serious paper shortage. As a primary teacher, I depend on these supplies to ensure my students growth, allow their creative expression, and instill a love of reading and writing. Every year I have to supply my own paper though neighborhood fundraising and personal savings. If this simple but necessary need of education was met, teachers could focus on the many more complex issues that require our attention. As teachers, we want the best for our students each day. Helping to fund or finding a solution to our paper shortage issue will have a major positive impact on students and teachers alike.

From Jeffrey Rupertus, 7th/8th Grade Science Teacher, Bache-Martin Elementary:

Due to the paper shortage I’ve had to ask my family members to buy me paper as gifts for the holidays and my birthday. It always brings up the uncomfortable question of, “Why does your job need you to buy the paper you need to do your job?” In all honesty, it is a humiliating question to have to answer. Can you imagine if you went to work and had to make copies or print something out that you needed to effectively do your job but your employer did not supply you with even-close-to the necessary amount of paper for those items? I doubt anyone would stick with that employer for very long!

From an ESOL Teacher, Bache-Martin Elementary:

If I had more paper, I would print multiple books that students could bring home to practice reading without worrying they would get lost or damaged by a younger sibling. I would make multiple copies of students’ best work for them to share with their family, friends, and the school community to celebrate.

From Jennifer Ganci, Kindergarten Teacher, Bache-Martin Elementary:

I frequently purchase paper for my class every year in order to be able to copy homework assignments as well as activities to use in the classroom. I do conserve paper and will use both sides as much as I can; any donations of paper would be greatly appreciated!
